If you have a health-related emergency call 112, the number for any emergency. The old 118 number is being phased out. Make sure that you explain the situation well so that if needed the Automedica with a qualified physician, will be dispatched besides an ambulance that usually brings volunteers with basic training. If the emergency concerns fire, drowning, inaccessible buildings or similar, let the person responding to 112 know, so they can dispatch the most appropriate assistance.
You can also go directly to the Emergency Room/Accident&Emergency ( Pronto Soccorso) nearest to you. When you arrive you will be asked for your health card (tessera sanitaria), ID and a description of the problem. As with emergency rooms anywhere, the wait depends on the gravity of your situation.
If you’re experiencing issues that are urgent but not serious (e.g. headache, fever, abdominal pain – for the full list of symptoms check here) you are better off going to the CAU (Centro di Assistenza Urgenza – Assistance and Urgency Center). Here you can find the up-to-date list of CAUs.
However, between the hours of 8pm and 8am, you should call 051.3131 for Continuità Assistenziale (Medical Assistance Continuity, previously known as Guardia Medica) and the operator will either send someone for a home visit or direct you to the nearest doctor’s office on duty.
In case you’re interested, The Red Cross of Bologna organizes courses for the population on ‘Primo Soccorso‘ (First Aid) that inform you on how to behave and assist in case of medical emergencies.
