CONTRACEPTION

Preservativi (condoms) are available in all pharmacies, also in 24-hour dispensers outside. You need a prescription for oral contraceptives in Italy; some brands are covered by the SSN. To discuss other forms of contraception, see a gynecologist.

EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

Emergency contraception or the morning after pill (la pillola del giorno dopo, Pgd) is available, free of charge, for anyone under the age of 26. To get a prescription, talk to your family doctor. Alternatively, go directly to your local consultorio familiare (family clinic). The list of these clinics can be found here.

Check our section Women’s Health for more information about the consultorio familiare.

PREGNANCY TESTS

Ask for un test di gravidanza (home pregnancy test) in any pharmacy. Otherwise, turn to your gynecologist, consultorio familiare, or one of the clinics open to foreigners without health care coverage.

UNWANTED PREGNANCY

Drop by a consultorio familiare – appointment not necessary. IVG – interruzione volontaria di gravidanza (voluntary termination of a pregnancy) is legal and is the woman’s choice through the first trimester. Once a positive pregnancy test has been confirmed, refer to a doctor or a consultorio familiare for counseling and information. The IVG procedure can only be performed in a public hospital, either at Policlinico Sant’Orsola-Malpighi or Ospedale Maggiore. There are no private options for this procedure. If an unwanted pregnancy is carried to term, adoption services are available at the hospital post-birth.

HIV & SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE TESTING

AIDS toll-free number 800 856 080 (managed by the Bologna AUSL for the whole region), which allows you to book, free of charge, even anonymously, an HIV test.
